Modest Cuixart (Barcelona 1925) is one Spain’s most international artists, his extraordinary solid trajectory confirmed him as a great experimenter, always from an extreme technical and conceptual rigidness with an unmistakable creative independence.

Although Cuixart entered the art world at a very young age, it is not until 1948 that he turns the art world upside-down as a founding member of the mythical group that created the DAU AL SET magazine and that along with Tàpies, Ponç, Tharrats, Brossa and A. Puig recovered the vanguard spirit to confront the general low level of culture of post-war Spain.

With time, Cuixart evolved towards informalism, a tendency that he shared with other great names of the Spanish art scene during the 50’s and 60’s such as Saura, Millares or Tàpies. International recognition of the artist became notorious with the award of prizes such as the 1959 Biennial of São Paulo.

He has exhibited throughout the world in institutions such as MOMA, Guggenheim in New York, Tate Gallery in London, the UNESCO Palace in Paris, in addition to representing Spain in some of the most important art events around the world such as the Biennial of Venice and the Documenta of Kassel.

He has actually got his own museum in Barcelona: Taller Cuixart BCN (very near the Picasso Museum). The opening of the Taller Cuixart was in late 2003 and it’s objective is to show and promote the work of the artist in the city of his birth, the four floored building contains about 50 works, representing the various stages of the artist’s career, distributed in a chronological manner.
